McKenzie Health, Watford City, had another exciting year in 2024 with expansions in services and physicians plus facility upgrades.
Dr. Richard Howard, Cardiologist
Dr. Richard Howard, cardiologist, joined the team on Nov. 5, 2024, bringing over two decades of experience in several states including ten previous years in North Dakota. He graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship at Boston University Medical Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, general cardiology, interventional cardiology and echocardiography with certification in resistant hypertension.
“I helped start cardiology programs, cardio stent programs and echocardiography programs in several states,” Howard stated. “When the opportunity knocked to help start a cardiology program in Watford City and neighboring areas, I had to answer.”
Dr, Howard is married to Brittany and has two children; Trenton and Amanda.

Dr. Chad Pedersen, Oncologist
Oncologist, Dr. Chad Pedersen began seeing patients in December 2024. He brings over a decade of internal medicine and specialized oncology and hematology expertise. The Sidney native completed his medical training at the University of North Dakota. He is currently pursuing an MBA to expand his knowledge of healthcare management.

99 Babies Born in 2024
The Obstetrics Department was a busy place in 2024 with 99 babies born! That number compares to 66 in 2023. OB-GYNs Dr. Carol Uhlman, Dr. Andrea DiMichele, Dr. Teinesha Irvey and Dr. Jenna Sloan helped moms and dads from western North Dakota welcome all those babies. Chapel, Courtyard, Greenhouse at Good Shepherd Home
With the generosity of approximately 150 donors, the Good Shepherd Home saw a $2.3 million expansion in 2024 with its chapel, courtyard and greenhouse almost completed. The newly expanded and remodeled serene chapel offers tranquil space for reflection and spiritual connection for people of all faiths and beliefs.
The greenhouse brings nature indoors, providing a vibrant environment for therapeutic activities and relaxation. The space increases engagement with gardening and natural light, promoting mental and physical health.
In between is a courtyard with modern gazebo space where residents can enjoy fresh air, fun get togethers, and outdoor activities.
These additions exemplify McKenzie Health’s commitment to holistic care, blending innovative healthcare with supportive spaces that nurture the body, mind and spirit.

Kitchen Remodel at Horizon Assisted Living Facility
On Grandparents Day in August, residents and family members were able to enjoy the newly remodeled and expanded kitchen at Horizon Assisted Living facility for the first time. Residents played a big role in the financial and designing aspects of the ‘heart of the home, the most valuable room,’ They all took part in Giving Tuesday, 2023 to raise money for the remodel. In November 2023, the Benefit Fund of McKenzie Health raised the full amount of $92,240 needed for the kitchen, supported by 31 generous donors.
The remodel features new cabinetry, flooring, appliances, and canned lighting. It was completed Aug. 21 by Sanford Construction under the direction of Lynn Welker-Fevold. The beautiful and functional new space now offers a comfortable place to share a meal, play games, and share stories with family and friends.
