House District 33 representative Brandon Ler was elected Speaker of the House for the next session at the caucus meetings held Nov. 12. This is Ler's third term as representative.
As speaker, Ler will be the presiding officer of the house with authority of administration, decorum, and the interpretation and enforcement of rules in all deliberations. He will also be the key negotiator between the house, senate and governor.
Ler said his goals this session include: protecting Montanan's pocketbooks by not increasing state government spending. He also wishes to take steps to retake some legislative power that has been slowly eroded over time by the judicial branch. "I want to take measures to regain the power given to the Montana Supreme Court and stop their egregious overreach of power in meddling in legislative business," Ler stated. "I am willing to work with other branches of government but not for them."
The next session begins on Jan. 6, 2025 with a Republican Governor and Republicans holding majorities in the House and Senate.
