The Sidney School Board approved the hiring of Kelly Johnson as Interim Middle School Principal at its meeting on Monday, Nov. 18, following the resignation of Ashley Copple. Johnson will begin her duties at the beginning of the second semester. Although there was internal interest in the position, Sidney Superintendent Sukut recommended hiring Johnson to give everyone a level playing field when the position opens up in the spring.
Johnson said she is looking forward to the unexpected opportunity to go back to the job she had for 13 years. "I have missed my interactions with the students and staff at the middle school," she said. "I'm happy to help with the transition." The appointment means no big disruption in the middle of the year since most of the students and parents know Johnson in some capacity, but Johnson emphasized that she will need the cooperation of the students, parents and staff to make the semester a good one.
Johnson retired three and a half years ago and says she has missed being principal. She taught 4th grade full time last year, 3rd grade some of the year before, and has often subbed during her retirement. She feels energetic and is ready to get back in the principal's chair. She hasn't decided whether to pursue the position when it becomes available but she knows she enjoys a challenge and being busy and that her husband, Randy, will support whatever she chooses. In addition to 13 years as principal at Sidney Middle School, Johnson has 21 years of teaching experience.
