The long-awaited basketball court is complete at Rau School. For years, the old asphalt court had served as a beloved but worn-out part of the school's daily life. Cracks ran through the surface, and the basketball hoops had lost their bounce. Despite its condition it has been a space for students to gather, practice, and dream of someday becoming a Sidney Eagle player.
But, as with all things, time had taken its toll, and it was clear that something needed to change.
The journey to the new court began with a conversation about the school's long-term needs. Concerns were raised about the safety of the crumbling asphalt surface, as well as the longevity of the materials used in the court's construction. The school's leadership, in partnership with the Parent Teachers Organization (PTO) and the school board, realized that if they were going to invest in the future of the school and its students, they needed to replace the old court with something new that would last. After careful research, they determined that a concrete slab would be the best option for durability, while also providing a safer, more reliable place for the students to play.
With the plan in place, the PTO and the school board came together to kick-off a fundraising campaign to raise the $30,000 needed for the project. The PTO was instrumental in organizing a series of small but impactful fundraisers throughout the year. From their yearly chocolate sales to a school dance and bake sales, the community rallied to the cause. Thanks to the support of students, families, and staff, the PTO raised an impressive $10,000 toward the new basketball court.
Recognizing the importance of the project, the school board stepped in with additional support. The board allocated $2500 to help fund the construction, signaling their full backing of the initiative. The momentum continued to build as local businesses, alumni, and grant organizations contributed to the fund, acknowledging the value of a safe, upgraded athletic space for the children of Rau School.
Last summer, after months of fundraising and planning the construction began. Workers tore up the old asphalt, poured a new concrete foundation, and installed two adjustable basketball hoops designed to accommodate players of all ages, heights, and skill levels. The result is a state-of-the-art court that would serve Rau School for many years to come.
Everyone involved in the dream would like to say thank you to the following businesses and organizations: Oneok, Grayson Mill Energy, Dayton Foundation, Stockman Bank, Richland Pump & Supply, MPLX, Kraken Oil and Gas, 1st Choice Collision Center, Hurley's Oilfield, Helena Chemical, Hermanson Fencing, Thiel Brothers Roofing, Frontier Heating, Sonda's Solutions. Border Steel, Agri-Industries, Hanson Independent, and Operation Roundup - LYREC.
It is clear that the community had poured its heart and soul into this project. The PTO's hard work, the school board's commitment, and the generosity of the local businesses and grants came together to create something special. What started as a dream to upgrade a worn-out basketball court has turned into a symbol of what our community can do when we work together. This is more than a physical upgrade, it represents the spirit of collaboration and determination that make Sidney a very special place to live.
