After 13 successful years running Hair Safari in Williston, Leticia Ortiz Kirkwood recognized a vital need in our local workforce: the shortage of trained professionals in the beauty industry. "I faced a real challenge in finding employable talent," she said. Determined to make a difference, Kirkwood launched the Hair Society Institute of Cosmetology (HSI) on March 1, 2021.
Since opening its doors, HSI has proudly graduated 70 enthusiastic students from across the MonDak region, including Williston, Tioga, Watford City, Fairview, and Sidney. "Some students have traveled an hour and a half just to attend our school," Kirkwood shared. With Billings and Bismarck as the nearest alternatives, HSI offers a convenient, local solution for aspiring cosmetologists.
Kirkwood believes that high-quality education begins with top-notch products and tools. HSI equips students with specialized training and certifications before graduation, ensuring they leave with the most relevant skills for success as licensed practitioners. "We use top-tier products, setting high standards that our students carry throughout their careers. Their licenses can go with them anywhere in the U.S.," she stated. As part of their training, HSI students provide affordable, professional services to the public by appointment and walk-ins, Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 AM to 4 PM. They offer a wide range of services, including haircuts, color, color correction, extensions, Keratin smoothing, permanents, and a variety of esthetic services like eye lash extensions, body waxing, facials, Dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, HydraFacial's, and more-all enhanced by a strong focus on the latest techniques and certifications.
