International Literacy Day: Sept. 8

Literacy is not a privilege – it is a right! Through reading and writing an individual gains a ticket to freedom, a bridge to opportunity, and a voice in the community. The international literacy theme for 2024 is “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies.”

In Richland County, multiple entities co-exist to continuously support this goal: parents and family members, public and private school systems, the Sidney - Richland County Library, and the Learning Volunteers for Adults program. The LVA program offers testing and tutoring services for adults (ages 16 and beyond) who wish to obtain their high school equivalency diploma (formerly known as a GED). Students have the option of choosing an on-line program through Dawson Community College or personal one-on-one tutoring at the Library in Sidney. Due to grants, private donations, and the generous support of the Sidney Public School Administration and the Richland County Commissioners, these services are offered at no cost to the students. Adults may also contact the LVA coordinator (406-480-1971) to assist with learning English as a second language and tutoring to strengthen daily life skills.

The SidneyRichland County Library has always offered a variety of programs designed to foster a love for reading and learning across all age groups. From engaging Storytimes that captivate preschoolers, to technology workshops that empower adults, the library’s mission is to enhance literacy skills and support lifelong learning. The library and its staff are available to the public, Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

This collective dedication to literacy not only enriches individual lives, but also strengthens the fabric of our community. Even though illiteracy in our world is a challenge, it can be solved – one child and one adult at a time.
