In an effort to enhance public safety by targeting impaired drivers and reducing the number of alcohol-related crashes, the northwest and southwest regions of the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) will be conducting enforcement efforts during the Labor Day weekend.
On Friday, Aug. 30, the NDHP, along with the Williams County Sheriff’s Office, and Williston Police Department, will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at a predetermined location in Williams County.
On Saturday, Aug. 31, the NDHP and Dickinson Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Stark County. In addition, saturation patrols will be conducted in Stark County on Aug. 30-31.
NDHP Northwest Regional Sergeant Preston Langer stated, “During the holiday weekend, we are conducting this enforcement event to ensure that everyone can enjoy the holiday safely. If you choose to drive impaired, you’re not only risking your own life but the lives of everyone on the road. Remember, drive sober or get pulled over.”
Through Aug. 18, 2024, there have been 55 fatalities in 51 crashes on North Dakota roadways; over 16% of the crashes involved alcohol.
NDHP Southwest Regional Sergeant Shawn Skogen reiterated the need to make responsible driving choices, “Our goal is to keep the roads safe for all drivers. We’re stepping up enforcement this Labor Day weekend to remind drivers that driving is a privilege, not a right and to protect that privilege by driving responsibly, and to never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
The North Dakota Highway Patrol reminds all motorists, motorcycle drivers, OHV drivers, and bicyclists to share the road; ensure all occupants are wearing seatbelts; drive distraction-free; and always make the responsible choice to drive sober. Results from these planned enforcements will be released the week following the event.
