Originally from Arizona, Mackenzie moved to Montana in July 2023 after escaping a difficult domestic situation. Seeking support from her sister, she hoped to rebuild her life, not only socially but also medically, considering her condition of focal-onset seizures and a heart condition that may cause fainting.
However, when Mackenzie moved to Montana with few belongings and her retired service dog, she faced unexpected challenges. Family drama and toxic relatives caused her mental and physical health to worsen, triggering frequent seizures and work absences. The local community and churches donated food, a table for her apartment, and money to pay for her rent, which she was struggling to pay because her seizures were making it hard to work the hours she needed to make rent. Her two best friends, who would become the inspiration for two of her book characters, went above and beyond to help her, offering not only emotional support but also financial aid for medication and transportation to doctor appointments. They even assisted her in obtaining essentials from Walmart.
As Mackenzie read Sarah J. Mass's book series "Court of Thorn and Roses", she found solace and self-healing alongside the characters. Through TikTok, she discovered an inspiring community of book lovers known as 'Booktok'. There, she connected with a fellow indie author who became a mentor and encouraged her to write a book despite personal challenges. With her mentor's guidance, Mackenzie embarked on a writing journey that served as an escape from her own life. Inspired by her own experiences, she crafted a world within her novel that resonated with readers, particularly with the main female protagonist, Hazel.
In October 2023, Mackenzie was in a dark place due to relentless family drama caused by toxic family members. Feeling pushed to the edge, she openly shared her pain with her sister but was met with harsh words and further betrayal. However, her friends from the online community 'Booktok' saw her warning signs, called for immediate help, and saved her life. Amidst this turmoil, she continued writing her novel, "Court of Ivory Feathers".
With the support of her two best friends and her online community on Booktok, Mackenzie has completed her book and will release "Court of Ivory Feathers" on Sept. 7 on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Step into the pages and follow the journey of Hazel, a heroine whose life is thrown into chaos after she uncovers her destiny as the prophesied savior of her kingdom. With the unlikely aid of the legendary but merciless Prince Atticus, Hazel embarks on a quest, uncertain of how to harness her magical abilities and ignorant of her duty to resurrect the mysterious Aestival race.
From the words of one of her Alpha readers, a reader who reads her first draft, "A story of a woman ripped from the life she thought she would have and into a prophecy. I loved the world-building and the emotion that went into this. There were so many points I found myself shocked by the twists and tearing up with everything Hazel had to endure. Plus, add in the dashes of angst and enemies to lovers, and this fantasy story is absolutely an incredible read."
