The first annual Sidney Tennis Tournament is currently underway. It began Aug. 11 and goes until Sept. 29. Matches take place at the tennis courts which are located by the skate park. Matches are held Sunday nights from 6-9 p.m. There are also two Friday nights of play: Aug. 30, and Sept. 6.
This tournament is a project to promote the sport of tennis in Sidney.
Local tennis player and passionate enthusiast, Naldy Hans, is the coach and the person who has taken on this task. Hans has always wanted to become a pro tennis player, and is working his way towards that dream. He came to Sidney after living in Puerto Rico. He was born in Haiti. One of his favorite tennis mottos is "It is you who fights your inner battles, not those around you. When you stay focused, you win."
Hans has worked very hard to promote this event and to teach people that the discipline of tennis can be beneficial in so many ways. He is very thankful to the sponsors of this tournament: Reynolds Market, Doorbust'n Septic Services, Franz Construction, Union Gateway Agency, Blue Rock, Leif Anderson, Kidus Dirasse, and Devin Wilkerson.
Naldy's full name is Naldy Hans Steev Celestine. When he first moved to Sidney, he contacted the United States Tennis Association and they told him the nearest teacher was in Glendive. Naldy is in contact with the tennis programs in Watford City, Glendive, and Williston to try to come up with some games with people from other towns. "Unfortunately, the only tennis court that is indoor is in Williston, but even though it is a bit of a drive, I'm thankful to be able to play and love the sport during the winter months." said Hans.
