Rev. Dr. Tim Tharp and Wendy Wiltzen, APRN, FNP-C, will be celebrated as the recipients of the 2024 Friend of Public Health Award at a public reception on May 13.
The Friend of Public Health Award is given by the Health Department to individuals or groups in recognition of outstanding support of public health efforts in our community.
Tharp was nominated by Jessica Gilbert, Behavioral Health/Crisis Coordinator at the Health Department in recognition of his strong advocacy of behavioral health initiatives in Richland County. Tharp has been integral in supporting and implementing school-based behavioral health programs like Character Strong and Hope Squad. He is the chair of the Behavioral Health Local Advisory Council and provides mental health training to adults and youth.
“He is always willing to support public health when his schedule allows,” Gilbert said in her nomination. “Tim sees the value in connecting behavioral health to the components of what makes a healthy community. His dedication to the community in the role of superintendent of county schools, Pastor of three parishes, and member of the Savage EMS and fire department is among the other roles he serves locally and statewide, is an exemplary act of service.”
Wendy Wiltzen, APRN, FNP-C, was nominated by Lesley Thiessen, WIC CPA and family planning nurse, and Heather Nevins, chronic disease coordinator, at the Health Department. She has served as a provider for the Family Planning program for 20 years, and a source of referral for breast and cervical screening for more than 15 years.
As a provider at Sidney Health Center, Wiltzen is an advocate for her clients, and reaches out to all resources to make sure her patients receive the help they need. “Wendy has gone above and beyond to spread the word about these programs. She knows the programs well, and encourages other providers to make referrals as well. Wendy is a tremendous supporter of public health,” Nevins said in her nomination.
