Eagle Baseball Season Opener Moved To Columbus Due To Weather

The Sidney Eagles baseball team was supposed to open their 2024 season at home against the Columbus Cougars on Friday and Saturday, March 22-23. Montana weather had other plans.

Their next game was scheduled for Friday, March 29, at home, against the Park Rangers. Despite shoveling off the field at Moose Park, the weather didn't cooperate and the game was cancelled. It still wasn't playable weather in Sidney on Saturday, but it was in Columbus!

So, on Saturday, March 30, the team left early to play Park, in Columbus, at 1 p.m., for their first game of the season. It was a cloudy, 36º in Columbus, but as we say in Montana, "At least there was no wind".

Senior, Ryder Hansen pitched for the Eagles during the first five innings. Park was up to bat first, and had one runner cross home plate. The Eagles didn't score in the first inning. The score was 1-0, Park, at the end of the first.

The second inning saw three more points from Park.  The score was 4-0 at the bottom of the second.

The Eagles first point of the season was scored by senior, Cayden Heck. Cayden walked to first, and stole second base on a slide. Cooper McNally had a base hit to first that brought Cayden home. Park scored two in the third inning, which ended with the score of 6-1.

There were no points scored in the fourth inning. Cooper Mcnally took over pitching for innings five and six. The fifth inning ended with Park still in the lead. The score was 9-1.

The Eagles had a great sixth inning, scoring five points. Ty Schepens had a base hit and scored after Braden Harris hit him in. This brought Trace Bain to the plate, who made it to first base on a hit. Then Gradin Sukut walked to first. Cayden Heck hit a double and brought in Harris and Bain to score. Ryder Hanson had a base hit that brought in Sukut, and Cooper Mcnally's base hit brought in Heck. The sixth inning ended with a score of 15-6.

Heck pitched the seventh inning. Park scored two more runs. The game ended in the seventh inning with the score of 17-6.

This week the Eagle boys travel to play the Watford City Wolves on Tuesday, April 2, and the Belgrade Bighorns on Friday, April 5.
