On Monday, March 18 at approximately 6:20 p.m. there was a 2-vehicle fatal crash seven miles west of New Town, ND.
A 2020 Ram 1500, driven by Darek Pederson, Blaine, MN was westbound on Highway 23 when the vehicle crossed over the centerline into the eastbound lanes and struck a 2023 Peterbilt Truck, driven by John Youngblood, 53, Ross, ND. The Ram 1500 came to rest in the center of the highway facing south while the Peterbilt came to rest in the south ditch of the eastbound lanes. Pederson was flown to Trinity Hospital and succumbed to his injuries. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The road conditions at the time of the crash were good and dry and the weather was overcast.
The agencies who responded to the crash were Three Affiliated Tribes Police, North Dakota Highway Patrol, McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office, New Town Fire, New Town Ambulance, and Trinity First Response.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
