Sidney Police Searching For Information On Attempted Theft

In the early morning of Friday, Dec. 22, two individuals were seen outside a business in Sidney attempting to steal some copper wire.

They pulled up behind the business in a white four-door car. The wire they attempted to take was heavy gauge, and the potential thieves were unsuccessful in cutting any away. They did, however, cause significant damage to the wire and, as a result, could be facing charges of attempted theft and criminal mischief.

Police Chief Mark Kraft said, "The Sidney Police Department is interested in hearing from anyone with information about copper wire or scrap metal theft in our area and, as always, the Sidney Police Department encourages the public to report any suspicious activity when they see it. If you see something, say something."

According to the Montana State legislative website, http://www.leg.mt.gov, a person convicted of criminal mischief can be fined up to $1,500, incarcerated up to six months in the county jail, or both unless they caused more than that in damages, injured a domesticated hooved animal, or caused a substantial disruption in public services. In that case the punishment could be much worse.

Anyone with information concerning this event is requested to contact the Sidney Police Department at 406-433-2210 or Richland County, Montana Crime Stoppers at 406-433-6666.
