A Thai restaurant opened up on Fox Run Oct. 11, in Sidney. Calvin and Kamonwan Urbatsch plus Juree Naowarat now run Jeab's Thai Food, serving authentic Thai food to Sidney, MT.
In 2003, the Urbatschs came to Williston, ND. from Thailand. Kamonwan had grown up in Thailand and worked in a restaurant back in KB, Brunei. One of the first things she noticed when she came to North Dakota was that there was nowhere to eat authentic Thai food. She longed to share the flavors of her homeland with the people around her by starting a restaurant but then was not the time. She got a job at Walmart and worked there faithfully for 15 years. Finally, about five years ago, Kamonwan was able to act on her dream. The Urbatschs were able to purchase a food truck and Jeab's Thai Kitchen was born. The husband-and-wife team ran the food truck for four years. Then, an opportunity opened up in Tioga and Kamonwan finally got her first mortar and brick restaurant and Jeab's Thai Kitchen in Tioga was born and is still in operation, today.
Then, one day, while taking a drive into Sidney to get some meat, Kamonwan saw a sign in the window of one of the empty spaces in Fox Run and she wanted to bring her Thai food to Sidney. Jeab's Thai Food in Sidney opened on Oct. 11. Although very supportive of his enterprising wife, Calvin was not as enthused with this one, "We were going to retire," he said. Their daughter, Juree Naowarat, who has helped in the restaurant and food truck, plans to take a trip to Thailand and when she returns the Urbatschs are handing it off to the next generation.
The Urbatsch's Sidney restaurant is open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday and serves many culinary treats from chow mein and fried rice to panang curry and Thai tea with boba or lime. Jeab's Thai Food is located at 430 N Central Ave, Sidney. They offer food for dine-in, take-out, and online ordering.
