Watford City To Hold State Hockey Tournaments This Week

This year, for the first time, both the boys’ and girls’ NDAHA State Hockey Tournaments will be held in Watford City the same year. The tournaments start March 2 at noon and go through March 5 at the Rough Rider Center.

Watford City has been the host of NDAHA hockey tournaments before, but always just for the boys or the girls. The NDAHA state planning committees and clubs plan which town will host the tournaments at the beginning of the year. Initially, Grand Forks was to host the tournaments, but due to other NDAHA tournaments and UND Hockey games Watford City was chosen. There will be ten different boys’ teams and ten girls’ teams from across the state. Thirty-eight games will be played with around 400 total athletes. The boys’ tournament starts Thursday, March 2, at noon and goes through March 4. They will have a banquet Friday, March 3 at the Rough Rider Center’s Field House. The girls’ tournament starts on March 3, at noon and goes through Mar. 5. The girls’ banquet will be Saturday, Mar. 4, also at the Field House.

Watford City is ready for it. The hotels in the area are already booked with the players coming to the event. Friday and Saturday the committee, club members, and community volunteers will be holding a Fan Fest event for the public out in front of the Rough Rider Center in honor of those coming for the tournaments, weather permitting. Planning committee member, Nikki Erwin said, “Nothing of this magnitude has been done at a state tournament.” For the fest, a big party tent will be set up with music by Brandon Foster and Junior, bingo, trivia, ping pong, a money grab, and cornhole.
