On July 2 at approximately 5:54 a.m. CST, a head-on fatal crash between a semi and a minivan happened on ND-23, east of New Town, ND. The semi was traveling west on ND-23 from Minot to Mandaree, ND. The minivan was traveling east on ND-23. The minivan crossed the center line on ND-23 shortly after clearing the intersection with the ND-23 by-pass. The semi applied brakes and steered right to evade. The minivan struck the semi head on in the westbound right turn lane. The driver of the minivan, Eduardo Ochoa, Watford City, was partially ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi, Alyssa Smith, Kenmare, was not injured. About ¼ of a mile of ND-23 was closed east of the by-pass to traffic for approximately 5 hours to remove vehicles and debris.
At the time of the crash the road conditions were dry and the weather conditions were clear.
Agencies that responded to the crash were, North Dakota Highway Patrol, Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office, Three Affiliated Tribes Police, New Town Police, Mountrail Rural Fire and New Town Ambulance.
Further details are being investigated by the North Dakota Highway Patrol and the Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office.
