On June 5, the community will be celebrating the graduating classes of 2021 with a Dragging Main event. Decorated senior vehicles will line up at the old south Shopko parking lot at 6:30 p.m. and drive through Sidney's main street.
"We encourage every 2021 high school graduate to come out to this event. This event celebrates the accomplishments of the seniors and gives the community a chance to say thank you for all your hard work," said Jason Schrader, one of the Sidney Dragging Main events organizers.
Cars will start lining up at 6 p.m. and graduates will be decorating their cars and dressing up in their caps and gowns. Sidney law enforcement will have parts of Main Street blocked off for the event and there will be a vehicle with a sound system, playing a special song for the seniors and announcing the class of 2021, leading the line slowly through Main Street.
After the senior celebration concludes, the group will proceed with a dragging main event, where everybody else brings out their cars and cruises around. Schrader and other organizers of the event will be setting up at Footers and will be giving away gifts. There will also be food vendors set up throughout the area.
This event was started last year as a way to celebrate the graduating class of 2020. It was such a big success that Schrader decided to organize another one this year.
"Last year with the COVID-19, the seniors' graduation wasn't as spectacular as it should've been, and these kids deserve to have recognition for their hard work, so I decided to do this event to give them a little more recognition".
Since the 2020 event, kids have been asking Schrader to put on another event for their graduation. He said, "When young kids like that ask you something - you just do it. I saw it in their eyes that it was so special for them, so I thought we have to keep doing this."
