Draft Environmental Assessment For Surplus Water Use At Lake Sakakawea Available For Public Comment

Riverdale, ND – A draft environmental assessment for a surplus water request at Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota is currently available for public review. The draft EA evaluates the use of surplus water and the environmental impacts of constructing an industrial water intake to allow 1,000 acre-feet (maximum withdrawal rate of 2,100 gallons per minute) to be used by White Horse Water, LLC for oil and gas development.

The proposed action, located in Sand Creek Bay of Lake Sakakawea, would include approximately 1,900 feet of horizontally directional drilled (HDD) underground pipe connected to a water intake screen above the lake bed, and approximately 1,200 feet of water pipeline (all on private land) connected to an existing water pond owned by White Horse, LLC. Approximately 1,850 feet of intake pipeline would be located on USACE-owned property. White Horse, LLC would locate the water pipeline within a common right-of-way within reason to minimize additional disturbance to the landscape. The majority of the proposed project is located on private land and easements have been secured with the landowner.

This draft EA is consistent with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, as amended, the Council on Environmental Quality’s regulations for implementing NEPA (40 CFR 1500-1508), the Corps’ regulations for implementing NEPA (33 CFR 325 and Engineering Regulation 200-2-2) and other applicable environmental laws and regulations.
