As an example of what is accomplished with the grant funding, in 2019 the MonDak Heritage Center received funding to preserve more than 36,000 pages of five Montana newspapers published between 1897 and 1960. All of those digitized pages are now freely available to the public on montananewspapers.org.
The Montana History Foundation will place $160,000 throughout the state during its upcoming 2020 grant cycle, which opens November 1. The History Foundation will provide grants up to $10,000 for projects that help preserve and protect Montana's history. Previously, the foundation provided grants up to $5,000.
"These grants help preserve community history in Montana," says Montana History Foundation President/CEO Charlene Porsild. "We are excited at the prospect of what can be accomplished in our communities by doubling the amount of grant funding available in 2020."
Since 2012, The Montana History Foundation has given grants each year to organizations that are working to preserve Montana's historic legacy. So far, more than $843,000 has been awarded. In an effort to invest $1,000,000 statewide by 2020, MHF will fund $160,000 in new projects this year.
"From dinosaur fossils to one-room schoolhouses, the Montana History Foundation funds the preservation of Montana history. We're looking forward to saving and sharing more of the past, with additional funds at our grantees fingertips," says Montana History Foundation Grants Manager Carissa Beckwith.
Tax-exempt organizations can apply for funds to preserve buildings and cemeteries, conserve and exhibit collections, collect oral histories and more. Funding details and the application link can be found at mthistory.org/criteria.
The grant cycle opens November 1 and applications are due by January 10, 2020.
