The 19th Annual MonDak Pulse Day will take place Thursday, February 7, 2019 at the Area Recreation Center in Williston, ND. Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. Central time and speaker presentations will begin at 9:00 a.m. Registration fee will be $20 per person, payable at the door.
The MonDak Pulse Day has continued to be a successful local area program to learn about the latest on the production, marketing, and utilization of pulse crops. The MonDak is a hotspot for pulse crop acres as they have been profitable, good for increasing soil nitrogen, and close to expanding markets.
The program will begin with talks on Chickpea Management. Michael Wunsch – North Dakota State University Plant Pathologist at the Carrington Research Center will speak on Ascochyta Management. Following this presentation will be Clair Keene, also from NDSU Extension Specialist/Cropping Systems at Williston Research Extension Center to present on Intercropping Chickpea and Flax for Managing Ascochyta. Continuing with the chickpea topic, there will be a grower panel where attendees can ask questions of farmers experienced in chickpea production.
Before lunch Sam Markell – NDSU Extension Plant Pathologist will discuss Fungicide Resistance Management. This is an important topic given the growing incidence of fungicide resistant-pathogens in a variety of crops and using fungicides wisely to preserve their effectiveness. After lunch, Brian Gion will give a brief Northern Pulse Grower Association update. Following the NPGA update will be Mackenzie Christensen with AGT to give a Pulse Market Update.
The afternoon will continue with Audrey Kalil – NDSU Plant Pathologist at Williston Research Extension Center, presenting on her work with the Northwest North Dakota Pulse Disease Survey. Then Brian Jenks from the NDSU North Central Research and Extension Center in Minot will discuss Weed Management and Palmer Amaranth. All famers and ag professionals should be aware that 2018 saw the first confirmed cases of Palmer Amaranth in North Dakota. The program will close with Brett Allen from the USDA-ARS station in Sidney presenting results from his long-term studies looking at the effect of crop rotation length on pulse yield.
An expanded trade show being coordinated by the Northern Pulse Growers Association will also be held in conjunction with Pulse Day with two dozen exhibitors expected for the show. Montana Pesticide Applicator credits and CCA CEU’s will be available. Door prize drawings will be held throughout the day with the program expected to conclude around 3:30 pm.
For those needing hotel accommodations, a room block has been reserved at The El Rancho Hotel at a reduced rate. To reserve a room, call the hotel at 701-572-6321 and mention the Pulse Day event.
