EARC/MSU Extension 2017 Field Day July 19

The EARC/MSU Extension in Sidney will hold its 2017 Field Day July 19. The morning will begin with registration at 8:30am.

At 9:00am Chengci Chen, EARC Superintendent will welcome everyone and give an introduction.

At 9:15am Duane Peters will discuss sugarbeet variety selection and agronomy.

Mr. Duane Peters is the Agriculture Manager with Sidney Sugars, Inc. Duane has many years of experience in sugarbeet agronomy. He is going to talk to growers about sugarbeet variety selection and update agronomic issues in this region.

At 9:30am Reza Keshavarz Afshar & Chengci Chen will discuss conservative tillage practices for sugarbeet production.

Dr. Reza Keshavarz Afshar is a Postdoc Researcher. He has an expertise in Agronomy and Soil Fertility. He will present the no-till and strip tillage practices in sugarbeet production.

At 9:45am Jamie Selting will discuss NRCS incentive program for no-till sugarbeet.

Jamie is a USDA-NRCS Specialist. He will present to growers the incentive programs for conservative tillage.

At 10:00am Frankie Crutcher will speak about spring wheat and barley nursery for screening Fusarium head blight resistance

Dr. Frankie Crutcher is a Plant Pathologist at MSU-EARC. She has an expertise in Plant Pathology and Genetics. She will talk to growers about wheat and barley Fusarium head blight disease and genetic selection for resistance to the disease.

At 10:25am Luther Talbert will talk about spring wheat breeding.

Dr. Luther Talbert is Spring Wheat Breeder at MSU-Bozeman. He will update growers about MSU spring wheat breeding effort and new varieties released or on the pipeline.

At 10:40am Jamie Sherman will discuss barley breeding.

Dr. Jamie Sherman is Barley Breeder at MSU-Bozeman. She will update growers about MSU barley breeding effort and new varieties released or on the pipeline.

At 10:55am Mike Giroux Durum will discuss wheat breeding.

Dr. Mike Giroux is a cereal quality expert at MSU-Bozeman. He will talk to growers about MSU durum wheat breeding and testing effort.

At 11:10am Yesuf Mohammed & Chengci Chen will present pulse crop variety testing.

Dr. Yesuf Mohammed is a Research Scientist. He has expertise in Soil Fertility and Agronomy. He will talk to growers about the state-wide variety testing for pulse crops coordinated by EARC.

At 11:25am Frankie Crutcher will talk about fungicide trials for pulse crops.

Dr. Frankie Crutcher is a Plant Pathologist at MSU-EARC. She has an expertise in Plant Pathology and Genetics. She will talk to growers about Fungicides that may be used to control seed-born or foliar disease in pulse crops.

At 11:50am Bart Stevens & Chengci Chen will present pulse crop irrigation management and crop rotation with sugarbeet.

Dr. Bart Stevens is the Research Leader and Scientist with USDA-ARS Northern Plains Agricultural Research Laboratory. He has an expertise in irrigated cropping systems. He and Chengci Chen will talk to growers about irrigation management in pea production as well as pea-barley-sugarbeet rotation system research.

At 12:05pm Tim Fine will speak about forage and hay issues in dry year.

Mr. Tim Fine is Extension Agent at Richland County Extension Office, covering many extension activities. He will discuss with growers about hay shortage in this dry year and potential alternative forages for growers in the region.

At 12:20pm the field day will conclude with lunch at EARC Office Building.
