The 36th Swank Variety Plot Tour on Tuesday, July 18th, 2017 will be held at the Swank farm north of Poplar. Registration will begin at 5:00 pm at the Swank family farm, with the tour starting at 5:15 pm at the test plot. This year’s speakers include Mike Giroux and Luther Talbert from MSU Bozeman’s Collage of Agriculture’s Plant Sciences, and Chengci Chen and Frankie Crutcher, MSU Eastern Agriculture Research Center in Sidney. The test plot this year includes 12 varieties of spring wheat and 12 varieties of durum.
Following the variety tour, enjoy a steak supper in the farmyard at 6:00 pm. Dinner is sponsored by Roosevelt County Extension, Culbertson Chamber of Commerce, Pearl & Mark Swank, Lois Weber, and their neighbors, as well as local businesses, including First Community Bank in Culbertson, Independence Bank of Poplar and Farm Equipment Sales of Culbertson. Ice cream is once again provided by a gracious donation from Arne Sutton Insurance Agency.
During dinner, Dr. Frankie Crutcher, EARC in Sidney, will be presenting on “Managing Fusarium head blight on wheat and barley.” Dr. Crutcher’s presentation will include how to identify Fusarium head blight in a field, as well as how to prevent head blight and decrease vomitoxin concentrations, both before and after harvest.
Everyone is invited to attend. The Swank Farm is located at 5106 Road 2041. From Hwy 2 (mile marker 617), go north on Hwy 251 (RY Trail) for 20.5 miles, then 3 miles west on Road 2041 OR 20 miles west of Froid on Hwy 344, 3 miles north on Road 1041, then 10 miles west on Road 2041.
