Brent Sanford became the mayor of Watford City, just when the oil boom began. After taking his new post as Attorney General of North Dakota, his mayoral position needed to be filled. With Sanford’s term originally not slated to be over until June of 2018, the mayoral office has been empty since he won election to the state-wide office in November. After a city-wide election, Justin Voll was voted as the next mayor of Watford City.
Voll, who has served as president of the First International Bank and Trust since July of 2015, was challenged by the owner of Watford Electric and a member of Watford City’s Planning and Zoning Commission, Greg Schuetze. The votes became official after the canvassing board met on February 27. Final vote tallies show Voll winning over Schuetze, by a margin of 250 to 72.
Because the mayoral office has been vacant for several months, Watford City Council President and city Fire Department Chief, Phil Riely, took interim mayor responsibilities on December 9, until the seat could be filled by the citywide election that took place on February 21.
