Walking to Wellness is coming up this Saturday, Sept. 10th. The purpose of the casual event is to encourage athletes of all levels to train for the half marathon. The fitness event will begin at 8:00am at the Ranger Hockey Arena, 601 7th Ave SW in Sidney, with registration starting at 7:30. Interested participants can register ahead of time at the Foundation for Community Care, 221 2nd St NW, or online at http://www.foundationforcommunitycare.org.
The full distance is 13.1 miles, however there is a 5K (3.1 miles) option as well as a 10K (6.2 miles) option. Families and teams are encouraged to participate, and it is recommended that people train for the event, building up to walking seven to eight miles per week. Remember, it is often easier to stick with any exercise program when you have an exercise buddy, so invite someone along.
Participants can either walk or run, and while it isn’t a race, individuals will be timed for general information purposes.
While completing the marathon is the end goal, the lasting benefit will come from training for the event, and getting into the habit of establishing a regular walking/running program.
Participation is free and prizes will be given to both groups and individuals. T-shirts will also be available for purchase at the event.
