September 23rd the skies will come alive as pilots fly into town for the 2016 Wings of Freedom Airshow. The Canadian Snowbirds, who are part of the Royal Canadian Forces, will be headlining this amazing show September 24th and 25th.
This is the fourth airshow the city has hosted. It was put into action after Bryan Prevost was contacted by the Canadian Snowbirds who were interested in coming back to perform in Sidney. They will be performing only eight of their 39 scheduled shows in the United States this year. Flying CF-18s, they are the only nine plane jet demonstration team in North America, and have fans come from all over the world to see their demonstrations. The Canadian Snowbirds were part of the Wings of Freedom Airshow in 2009 and came to visit for an impromptu demonstration in 2013.
The airshow will be held at the Richland County Airport at 1:00pm both days and tickets are $15 for ages 15 and up, $10 for ages 6 – 14, and kids 5 and under are free. Tickets will be on sale soon in Sidney at the Chamber of Commerce located at 909 S Central Ave., Richland Aviation located at 544 Airport Road, and Yellowstone Bank located at 120 2nd St. NW.
Other airmen demonstrating their talents are Brent Handy, Matt Younkin, Bill Stein, Jim Peitz, Gene Soucy, and Warren Pietsch. Pietsch and Danny Clisham, announcer for the event, are both honorary Snowbirds.
The 2016 Wings of Freedom Airshow has received partial funding through the Tourism Business Improvement District; TBID can provide partial funding for events that bring over-night guests to town, helping to promote Sidney as a visitors' center.
