Richland County Boys & Girls Club is helping to promote healthy eating and physical activity with the selection of nutritious and appropriate snacks for its members when Club is open. Janelle Buxbaum, Operational Program Manager for the local club, works hand in hand with individuals and businesses in Richland County to bring the Healthy Snack Program to Club members. Healthy food options that are donated include milk, yogurt, fresh fruit and vegetables. Summer of 2015 was the start of a first garden program with Club members to understand healthy food processes; ground to table.
Boys & Girls Club of Richland County averages over 100 members daily, each receiving a healthy snack after school. From July 2015 to Dec. 2015 the Club served over 9,500 snacks to members.
Though the Club has many contributors that support the Club’s Healthy Snack Program, Reynold’s, Reese & Rays, and Oneok were the Club’s largest 2015 contributors.
The Club was awarded two linked grants (Wanna Play & Triple Play) from Coco-Cola and Major League Baseball in which a portion helps support healthy snacks eating and education. Wanna Play is a national program that encourages children to increase their overall fitness and health through physical activity and improved nutritional habits, while learning the fundamental skills of baseball and softball. The Triple Play program encompasses three components to promote a healthy lifestyle through good nutrition, regular physical activity and positive relationships with others! Club members who participate will understand the benefits of eating smart and being physically active. Members are adopting healthier habits by participating in fun, engaging activities at the Club. Most importantly, they learn to take small steps toward positive, lasting behavior change.
