Sidney Sugars is pleased to welcome Kathryn Cayko to the team. Cayko’s first day as the new Agriculturalist for Sidney Sugars was Mon., Sept. 28. Cayko is managing the Fairview pile grounds, taking over for Duane Peters who was recently promoted to Agricultural Manager. “I’m very excited about the position. I’m jumping in at the busiest time of the year. The pile grounds are busy and there is a lot going on, but it’s new and exciting for me,” said Cayko.
The Maine native graduated from Montana State University Bozeman with a Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture in 2011 and graduated from the University of Maine with a Master’s Degree in Plant Science and Food Chemistry in 2014. She is familiar with root crops, having worked extensively with potato crops, and worked as a chemist for Syngenta Crop Protection in North Carolina for a year and a half before moving to the area.
She has always enjoyed plant science and, ultimately, outreach to growers and her interest has been cultivated into a career. “There aren’t a lot of people who don’t grow up on a farm and decide to go into agriculture, but I am very passionate about it and I am excited to work with the area growers. I hope that my knowledge can be a benefit to them and benefit the community as well,” she commented.
In addition to her excitement about her new position, Cayko is also very happy to be calling Eastern Montana home. “I love it here,” she added. “It feels like coming home.”
