First Gun, First Hunt, First Deer

Opening weekend of North Dakota's deer season 2014 was really cold, but first time hunter Valerie Deicks, Cartwright, stuck it out and was rewarded with a 4-point mule deer buck.

She and her husband, Dutch, stalked the animal for over two hours, using the noise of migrating geese to cover their movements.

"He was wonderful," Valerie said of her husband. "He knew just what to do and where to go."

Deicks shot the gun, which she had won, for about an hour, sighting it in and getting comfortable with it. She had won a tag in the North Dakota deer lottery for the first time and was determined to fill it. The deer was shot in the Cartwright area.

"It was an awesome hunt, and a lot of fun, even though it was really cold," she said.

The head is being mounted in Circle while the meat was donated to Sportsmen Against Hunger through the Stanley High School.
