Miriam Backhaus and Sawyer Flynn were honored at an assembly at Fairview High School last Tuesday, hosted by VFW Post 4099 and Ladies Auxiliary.
Each year, the VFW sponsors a Voice of Democracy contest where students prepare a speech displaying patriotism and honoring the armed forces, past and present. Violet Tharp, District 5 president, spoke to the students about the contest and encouraging them to enter. State winners receive a free trip to Washington, DC and a chance at winning $30,000
Backhaus, a senior at Liberty Christian School in Sidney, has entered the contest each year for 4 years. This year, she earned 2nd place and a check for $250 from the auxiliary. She is the daughter of Pastor Michael and June Backhaus.
Flynn, a senior at Fairview High School, is the son of Dona and Scott Flynn. For his presentation, Flynn earned 1st place locally accompanied by a check for $500, 1st place in the district and a check for $100 as well as 2nd place at state and a check for $1000.
