The McKenzie County Courthouse located in Watford City, ND, has recently undergone a 14,000 square foot addition as well as several renovations. The recent population growth of the county has increased the needed employees from 135 in 2008 to 238 in 2015 calling for an expansion of all departments including the addition of three State's Attorneys Offices. The complete renovation of the courthouse includes a more open design with new flooring, remodeled offices and bathrooms. One of the biggest advancements has been in the way of technology, allowing for a much needed security upgrade. The project is nearing completion with the current remodel of the main meeting room.
In the spring of 2013 there was a unanimous vote among the county commissioners to proceed; having outgrown the courthouse which was last updated in 1975, the additional space was necessary to accommodate the increase in employees.
"The population has grown and it just takes more people to service a large county," said County Commissioner Ron Anderson.
The architectural firm ICON and Construction Engineers, both out of Grand Forks, ND were hired and construction began in the fall of 2013. During this time, five double wide trailers were used as offices for approximately sixteen months. The week of January 19, 2015, the building was move-in ready.
With the possibility of a second judge coming to Watford City, the hope is that the expansion will be enough without the inclusion of a second courtroom.
The expanded building has increased county employee morale creating a better and more functional space for those who need to utilize the courthouse.
