Local Red Cross volunteers respond at all hours of the day and night with food, blankets, clothing, lodging, and comfort to help more than 500 people with nowhere else to turn after disasters in 2014. That includes 15 families displaced after a tornado hit Watford City, ND last summer.
As the population in western North Dakota and eastern Montana increases, the need for volunteers and capacity also rises. From home fires to blizzards and tornadoes to floods, the Red Cross will be there. But we can’t do it without the help of our neighbors. 94% of the humanitarian services the Red Cross provides are done by volunteers.
The is why the Red Cross not only needs your help with contributions to support those in need, but also needs your help to build its volunteer base. Are you looking to make a difference in your community? Spending time with the Red Cross can provide that opportunity.
“As responses grow in our region, building our capacity will be so important,” said Kira Nauman, Red Cross Disaster Program Manager in western North Dakota. “Having disaster team members available is critical so we can be efficient and nimble in our responses.”
The Red Cross encourages everyone in the area to take steps to be safe and ready for disaster. Download our Red Cross apps on your mobile devices for free on itunes and google play stores. These apps will give you steps before, during, and after an emergency situation.
“Preparation is the first step in the disaster cycle,” Nauman added. “Practicing escape plans and making sure your family is ready can make a huge difference.”
The Red Cross will be holding an informational meeting in Watford City, ND for those interesting in serving as a volunteer. There is no obligation to commit, just a chance to learn more.
Time: 6:00 p.m. Where: City Hall 213 2nd St. NE Watford City, ND
