The 2015 Wheat Show promises to be two days packed full of information and association to break the winter doldrums. As is tradition we will start the show with a hearty breakfast and a look at the weather as Leon Osborne, director of the regional weather center at UND, walks us through the possibilities and probabilities for the 2015 growing season. Updates on grain transportation plus the latest on fad diets and wheat gluten intolerance round out the morning leading us to lunch sponsored by the Williams County Farmers Union.
We all have a great understanding of our business, but how we articulate that understanding is very important so Katie Pinke, an ag advocate will help us understand how to communicate and maybe even stimulate the desire to communicate our business with the non-ag world. A farm program update, a session on how our wheat performs “in the oven” and wheat promotion issues lead us into the evening social where we can continue the informal education over supper and a beverage. The day isn’t complete yet as Dr. Frayne Olson, NDSU crop economist discusses the grain market outlook followed by Joe Albrecht from the Minneapolis Grain exchange explaining how to maximize the market price of our crops.
Day two dawns with another breakfast and allows us time to visit across the table with our neighbor and stroll the trade show before we hear Dr. Mike Boehlje of Purdue University discuss what is probably one of the largest and most important inputs on our farms, labor.
We in Agriculture have a passion for our livelihood and the Williams County Ag Improvement Association has sponsored Mark J. Lindquist, “Passion! 8 Steps to Find Yours”, as the Recognition Luncheon speaker. Hands-on demonstrations on Crop Salinity, New Durum Varieties, Scab Management and Marketing Strategies for High DON wheat will keep us from that after dinner lull and round out the show.
The Wheat Show Committee couldn’t do it without the help of our sponsors, participants and you! So a big Thank You to all. Hope to see you there.
