This spring I decided I would like to put on a clinic for our area 4-H and FFA kids. I contacted a good friend in Oklahoma, Kevin Frazier, who has been teaching Ag for 30+ years and asked if he would be willing to come up. He then asked his good friend Rick Barnthouse of Essential Show Feeds if he would be willing to team up with us and everything fell into place! I also brought on board Caitlin Klaboe out of Miles City to help particularly with the lamb and goat portion. We had about 30 kids come from multiple counties to take part in the clinic. Friday morning we kicked off with the lamb and goat portion and then after having lunch, provided by Essential Show Feeds we moved on to the hog portion.
The next morning we started our all day beef clinic! Once again our lunch was provided by Essential Show Feeds. The kids and parents had a little classroom part in which Kevin covered things like selection of animals and proper care and then Rick covered different ways to feed and supplement the animals for the best results! Each kid also worked on showmanship and handling the animal. And an example animal was clipped to show everyone first hand how to get ready for show.
Over all I feel this clinic was a huge success and I definitely plan to hold more clinics in the future to help our area youth grow in their knowledge and abilities to select, feed, work with, and show animals!
