Sidney MSU, ARS Host Dryland Field Day July 1st

Montana State University’s Eastern Ag Research Center (EARC) and the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Northern Plains Agricultural Research Lab (NPARL) in Sidney have teamed up for a joint Dryland Research Field Day set for Tuesday morning, July 1st at their adjoining research plots located northwest of Sidney.

The combined half-day event begins at nine am at the ARS research farmsite located about 4 miles north of Sidney on the Culbertson highway. Take a left at County Road 129 and a second left on County Road 346 to get to the farmsite. In case of rain, the speakers will move indoors to the Richland County Extension Office Conference Room at 1501 N. Central in Sidney.

The tour concludes with a free lunch at 12:30 pm sponsored by the Richland County Extension Office. Three private and one commercial pesticide points are available for those attending the event.

Speakers and topics for the day include the following stops looking at EARC research:

• Spring wheat and safflower production under conventional and chemical-free conditions - Joyce Eckhoff, Professor of Agronomy, EARC

• Integrated management of Ascochyta blight of Chickpea - Sherry Turner, Research Associate, EARC

• Long-term continuous spring wheat production under several tillage systems - Joyce Eckhoff, Professor of Agronomy, EARC

• Safflower production in the MonDak region - Jerry Bergman, Dir., NDSU Williston Research Extension Center

• A look at orange wheat blossom midge trapping/surveys past and present in Northeastern Montana - Deb Waters, Biological Science Technician (Insects), ARS

• New wheat midge monitoring program in Montana - Joyce Eckhoff, Professor of Agronomy, EARC
