Gina Waid, graduating senior at Virginia High School was awarded the second annual McConnell Scholarship for 2014 during the school's Awards Assembly on Friday, May16.
Waid is the daughter of Christina Bingham and Jeff Waid. She plans to attend Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis where she will study Forensic Science.
Gina says she chose her field of study because science teacher Mr. Bartels taught about it in class one day and it interested her very much.
The McConnell Scholarship is awarded by math teacher, Fred McConnell, his wife Pat, and their three children. They created the scholarship in appreciation to the community, school and people of Virginia.
"In choosing Gina to receive this scholarship we are rewarding her hard work and dedication to learning," McConnell said.
McConnell has been teaching for 38 years. He and Pat spent 33 years in Montana, 30 years in Fairview and three years in Poplar.
After their youngest child graduated in 2002, the McConnells discussed awarding a family scholarship for several years. The children agreed that it was a great idea and also support the funding for the scholarship.
Applications for the scholarship must be filled out in order for a student to be eligible. They are available each spring from the McConnells.
