Froid Scholarship Tournament

The Froid Scholarship Tournament originated in 1984 as a tribute to Jeff Ryder. All profits from this tournament have gone into the Jeff Ryder Memorial Scholarship fund. The scholarships are given from the interest earned by the trust fund and will be a continuous and lasting fund.

Initially, scholarships were awarded to Froid High School students. As the tournament grew and sound base was built in the trust fund, the committee felt more scholarships could be awarded. Since we have received such tremendous support throughout the years from our surrounding communities, the committee felt that scholarships should be awarded to students in the surrounding areas that have supported the tournament through advertising and bringing teams to this event. Students from Bainville, Brockton, Culbertson, Grenora, Medicine Lake, Poplar, Plentywood, Sidney, Williston, Westby, or Wolf Point may apply for a scholarship also. The Scholarships are not limited to good athletes; the awards are based on academics and school involvement. Since inception in 1984, The Froid Scholarship Tournament has awarded over $50,000 in scholarships. The committee will be awarding up to $4,500 this year.

Also annually in conjunction with the tournament is the Rod & Gun Club’s Annual Fish Feed! Both organizations are very appreciative of your continued support.

The FST has grown in size and quality each year. The first two tournaments were comprised of local area talent. Since then, teams from eastern & central Montana, western & central North Dakota, and other countries including Canada have gathered to play the third weekend in March! The purse has grown from $600 to $6,000. The 3-point contest was initiated in 1988. In 1989, a Calcutta Auction was added which has greatly enhanced the popularity and success of the 3-point Shootout.
