Over the last year, Sidney coach Guy Melby has gotten a lot of recognition for his success and devotion as a coach. With his 27th year as Sidney High School’s wrestling coach underway, his number of accomplishments have piled up. Melby isn’t just a coach to his wrestlers, he is their mentor.
Melby’s dedication to the sport, his wrestlers, and Sidney hasn’t gone unnoticed. Levi Prevost, 1997 and 1999 Montana State Champion with the Sidney Eagles, stated the following about Coach Melby. “He, as a coach and teacher, has left a lasting impression on me. One of the things he always stressed is out working your opponent, whether it be on the mat or in life. The guy who works the hardest will most likely end up on top.”
In July of 2012, Melby was recognized and awarded Wrestling Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. Melby’s coaching methods obviously prove that he’s doing something right. Melby doesn’t just coach during the season, he builds and prepares his next championship team annually with year round camps and tournaments. He holds a wrestling camp each year and coaches both Sidney and other wrestlers across Montana at the National Scholastic Duals in Orlando, FL.
Melby also starts his team from ‘small’ beginnings. As Prevost stated, “He was involved early with all of the young kids in the AAU program, starting the foundation for his high school program there.”
Just recently in October, Melby spoke at the University of Minnesota for a coaches’ clinic. 156 coaches, both high school and college, attended the clinic to hear Melby and others speak.
As of the beginning of the 2012 season, Melby has eight Montana State Team Championships under his belt including 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2000, 1993, 1992, and 1989. He also has 369 dual meet wins, 49 individual champions, and 194 state place winners in his coaching career.
Needless to say, in Sidney when you hear the name Melby, you think wrestling.
