Tri County Sewing Camp Recycles

Recycling was the theme at this year’s Tri County Sewing Camp. Thirteen area sewing students and fifteen adults from surrounding counties gathered on Thursday at the Roosevelt County Complex to create unique sewing items.

“The recycled items are nice and inexpensive products to learn on. There isn’t a lot of cost involved, and they can give them as gifts or keep them for themselves,” Leslie McMillen, Richland County 4-H sewing leader, said.

Students created recycled animal food hand bags. These bags were made from dog, cat and horse food sacks. These feed sacks were then transformed into wonderful small hand bags, complete with carrying straps. Students learned they were great for carrying groceries, clothing, games...you name it!

“Doing these bags was the most fun, because it was something different. I plan to give it to my grandpa,” Mariah Machart, Missouri River Rats 4-H Club member, said.

Recycled t-shirts were also made. Students brought in their old t-shirts, and a new summer shirt was created! Sleeves were cut off and ties were put in, creating a perfect look for the summer.

Taylor Schepens, Brorson Farmhands 4-H Club member, has been sewing for four years and thought the recycled t-shirts were the best part of the camp. This summer, she plans on wearing her new shirt.

Sewing students also enjoyed creating their own pillow in the shape of a letter. Creative material was chosen just for the occasion. Pillow designs were polka dots, stripes, bright colors, fun shapes and more.

Concluding the camp was the creation of holiday stockings. Students made holiday stockings from recycled blue jeans, but a splash of color was added to each stocking. These stockings will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Billings.

“We chose the Ronald McDonald House because we have had a few area residents use the house, and we have discovered how important this house is to our community,” Ardis Oelkers, Roosevelt County MSU Extension agent, said.

The Tri County Sewing Camp is held every June at the Roosevelt County Complex in Culbertson. It is a combined effort of Sheridan, Richland and Roosevelt MSU County Extension offices.
