Mid-Rivers Awards 25 Scholarships Totaling $25,000 To Area Students

Mid-Rivers Communications is proud to announce the recipients of 25 $1,000 Higher Education Scholarships to high school and college students within the Cooperative’s service area. Two scholarships went to high school seniors planning to attend a Tech School, three to high school seniors that will attend a Community College, three to current college students returning to college in the fall, and 17 to high school seniors planning to attend four-year universities in 2012-13.

A $1,000 Mid-Rivers Higher Education Scholarship has been awarded to the following recipients:

Current College Students:

Calvin Stickel, Glendive, has achieved a 4.0 GPA at Dawson Community College and plans to move on to Montana Bible College in Bozeman. He plans to return to his family’s ranch in Eastern Montana. High School Seniors attending Tech School, Community College, or Four-Year Universities:

Kelsey Halvorson, Sidney, plans on majoring in Psychology and Criminology at the University of Montana, with the goal of becoming a prosecuting attorney.

Ciara Hutchison, Glendive, intends to become a licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine by obtaining degrees from Concordia College and the University of Minnesota.

Ashley Morast, Fallon, will attend the University of Mary with the goal of receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training followed by a Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy.

Jenna Mullendore, Glendive, plans to attend Black Hills State University in the fall in the pre-nursing curriculum and the Honors Program, and later transfer to South Dakota State University to complete a degree in nursing with a minor in business administration.

Brooke Phipps, Glendive, will be attending Utah State University in the fall of 2012, double-majoring in mathematics and music. She plans to pursue Master’s degrees in both fields and hopes to return to Eastern Montana to teach.

Mykala Senner, Bloomfield, will be attending the University of Mary to pursue a degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and plans to spend her sophomore year studying abroad at the University’s campus in Rome, Italy.

Ty Tousignant, Wibaux, plans on attending Montana Tech in Butte as a student athlete and Mechanical Engineering student.

Ashley Utgaard, Sidney, wants to work with children with disabilities and will attend Lake Region State College in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota.

Mid-Rivers will also award ten (10) additional $500 scholarships to area students through a drawing at the Cooperative’s Annual Meeting on May 30, 2012, at the Fergus County Trade Center/Fairgrounds, Lewistown. To qualify for the scholarship drawing, the student must: sign up at the Annual Meeting; be enrolled to attend a higher education institution in the fall of 2012; provide proof of full-time enrollment at the meeting and; be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is a member of the cooperative.

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and close at the start of the business meeting at 1 p.m. Previous Mid-Rivers scholarship winners are not eligible for the scholarship drawing. Interested students may contact Mid-Rivers at 1-800-452-2288 for more information. Students unsure of their parent/guardian’s membership status with the Cooperative should call Mid-Rivers prior to the annual meeting for verification.

Other educational commitments made by Mid-Rivers include the operation of a Distance Learning system connecting area high schools and colleges, annual sponsorship of the Montana Chamber of Commerce’s High School Business Challenge, and the employment of several School-to-Work students each year in several communities. Mid-Rivers also provides discounts to area schools and libraries on their telecommunications services through the federal ”E-Rate” program, and offers free grant-writing assistance to area schools and youth organizations.
