Authorities Repeat Request In Search For Missing Teacher

Authorities are repeating a request for landowners in eastern Montana and western North Dakota to search their properties for signs of missing Sidney teacher and alleged kidnapping victim Sherry Arnold.

Arnold disappeared Jan. 7 from Sidney and is presumed dead. Her body has not been recovered.

The FBI is asking property owners to check for disturbed soil and matted grass on vacant farmsteads or along shelter belts, which are lines of trees that protect farmland from wind. The agency says Arnold’s body may be buried in a shelter belt with mature or rotted trees.

Two men charged in Montana with aggravated kidnapping in the case are being held in Williston. Extradition hearings are scheduled for Feb. 14.

The men, Lester Waters Jr., 47, and Michael Spell, 22, both of Parachute, CO, have been in the Williams County jail in Williston since Jan. 13 and are fighting extradition to Montana. They face charges of aggravated kidnapping, which carries a maximum sentence of death in that state.

According to court records, the two men left western Colorado less than two days before Arnold disappeared. Both have criminal records.

Property owners are advised not to put themselves at risk. Property owners who discover something unusual are asked not to disturb the site and are asked to call 701-774-9191.
