As the candy cane resumes its place temporarily on the top of the food pyramid and community members watch to see who will be the first to hang up their festive Christmas lights, plans are underway to celebrate a growing Culbertson tradition; the annual Christmas open house. The evening of merriment offers community members the opportunity to take in a local concert and visit fellow community members over a hot cider and tasty treats.
This year’s event is taking place on Dec. 19, in downtown Culbertson with events beginning at 4 p.m.
The Lion’s Club is hosting their free stew feed at the senior center from 4-6 p.m. as a way of thanking the community for their support of the Lion’s Club each year. “Most of our efforts focus on youth and the community has always supported us in everything we try to do. This is something we do to show our appreciation for their support,” said Edward Darr, a Lion’s Club member.
He said preparations for the meal will begin as early as 9 a.m. and involve about a half a dozen people assisting throughout the event. Last year over 150 people were in attendance.
The Lion’s Club does many charitable projects throughout the year including a Palm Sunday dinner, handing out flags to elementary students, a spring track meet and putting up and taking down the holiday lights downtown.
First Community Bank is opening its doors from 4-6 p.m. and serving coffee, cider, meat and cheese trays and other goodies as their way of thanking the public for their dedicated patronage. “The bank employees sponsor this event every year as their way of saying thanks to their customers for their patronage. It is our hope that people will enjoy the free stew feed and then come over to the bank for dessert,” said Wayne Hendrickson, branch manager. They will also be giving away bags filled with banking supplies such as calendars and calculators.
Culbertson School will be hosting their annual Christmas concerts and this year’s theme is “Christmas Carols”. Grades 5-12 band, choir and music classes will be performing on Dec. 1 in the school gymnasium at 7 p.m. On Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. kindergarten through 4th grade will perform their Christmas program in the old armory.
As part of the Lion’s Club’s participation in the open house activities, members will be handing out goodie bags for the children immediately following the concert.
Students involved in Culbertson school’s Explore America program will be giving the elves up at the North Pole some competition as they will soon be mass producing their holiday cookies as part of their annual fundraising efforts. They are selling lefsa for $8 per dozen as well as Christmas cookies. Small trays are $18 and large trays are $25. Trays are also on sale at the concert.
