Food safety, a larger issue than most people are aware of, costs the nation an estimated $35 billion each year. Problems can occur at any point in the food chain from the farm to the kitchen to how the food is served.
Employees from Betania, Cattle-Ac, DCC Rental Bed and Breakfast, Double Barrel, Hotel Albert, South 40 and Winners Pub attended a two-hour food safety workshop taught by Judy Johnson, MSU Richland County Extension Agent. For some attendees it was a refresher course while it was new to others.
With most food establishments being short staffed and very busy it was a good opportunity to take a look at what can cause problems when preparing food. Since germs cause almost all food-borne illnesses the class focused on how personal hygiene can be a positive or negative influence, keeping foods at the correct temperature will reduce bacteria growth and preventing cross contamination can also guard against unwanted germs.
