Artifact Conservation Volunteer Workshop At Fort Union

Artifact conservation is the fine art of helping damaged antiques last for centuries to come and perhaps regain a youthful appearance. Fort Union Trading Post is looking for a few good volunteers with steady hands and an interest in preserving history. The museum collection at Fort Union contains many archeological artifacts in need of basic care and cleaning.

They are offering two professional workshops on the conservation of archeological objects. The workshops will be conducted by Nicole Grabow, Midwest Arts Conservation Center objects conservator, Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. Grabow has treated ancient Roman vessels, African bronze figures, Plains Indian beadwork and many other precious museum artifacts.

The workshops are free of charge and include sessions on: principles of conservation, assessing artifact condition, safe cleaning methods and making repairs. Participants will work on artifacts from the Fort Union Trading Post archeology collection.

Conservation of Archeological Metal will be held from Nov. 28-Dec. 1. Monday: 1-5 p.m. and Tuesday-Thursday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Workshops are limited to eight participants. To sign up, contact Audrey Barnhart, Fort Union Curator, 701-572-1029 ex. 212.
