Trashy Tuesdays

Trashy Tuesday drive will be held this coming Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 3-7 p.m. at Richland County Public Works, located at 2140 W. Holly Street by the fairgrounds. At the last Trashy Tuesday, the community recycled 410 lbs. of office paper, and 200 lbs. of plastics. The drives are being sponsored by the Recycling Advisory Committee. The committee consists of area citizens who would like to ensure that the community has an opportunity to recycle material that cannot be recycled using the current resources. Their goal is to create a more comprehensive and sustainable recycling program in the county. Committee members include Kent Simonis, George Biebl, Russ Huotari, Jackie Couture, Linette and Greg Miller, Jeff Hintz, Cindy Eleson, Darci Haraldson, Randy Olson and Gary Schaff.

On Trashy Tuesday, the materials that will be accepted are plastic bottles, office paper and plastic grocery bags. Examples of plastic bottles include milk jugs, and laundry detergent, dish soap and hair product bottles. As long as the container has a threaded neck which is smaller than the base, it can be taken to the drive. The committee asks that all jugs and bottles be washed out and the lids removed. At the last event, unwashed milk jugs were brought to the event and these cannot be accepted due to sanitation issues. Bottles must be rinsed to be recycled. All paper products can be recycled with the exception of manila envelopes and bright neon paper. Catalogs and telephone books cannot be accepted. Plastic grocery bags will be collected, and these will not be recycled but reused. For that reason, the bags must be free of holes. Community members who bring items will sort their plastics, office paper and grocery bags at this event.

Trashy Tuesdays are scheduled the 3rd Tuesday of every 3rd month of the year from 3-7 p.m. and a full year of recycling drives are planned in Sidney. Start collecting today for Trashy Tuesday for the coming drive on the 18th and continue collecting! Jan. 17, April 17, July 19 and Oct. 16, 2012 are the additional Trashy Tuesday collection dates.
