  • Sometimes Hunters Get a Good Story & a Good Shot

    Meagan Dotson|Oct 5, 2016

It was November 2013, and on that cool and snowy day Josie Evenson and her dad went out hunting. It was the last week of the season, and the pair traveled up an old logging road until they could drive no further. They parked the vehicle and started hiking up and over a ridge and down into a bowl-shaped land formation, surrounded by ridges. They decided to sit and glass, which means they were going to scope out the surrounding area with binoculars. Evenson has been hunting all of her life, along...

  • What Are You Afraid Of?

    Bruce Auchly|Oct 5, 2016

People and their phobias. While walking the other day with a friend in a newly mown field – a backyard really – a slender eastern racer snake probably two feet long crossed in front of us. My friend, born and raised in Glendive, and tough as railroad spikes, jumped about three feet in the air and let out a scream heard in the next ZIP code. Everyone has their fears, phobias and hatreds when it comes to the natural world. Take your pick: from big grizzly bears down to swift snakes and its...

  • Community Partners Make Gartside FAS Enhancements Possible

    Oct 5, 2016

Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks just completed a major enhancement project at Gartside Reservoir Fishing Access Site in Richland County, but it would not have been possible without the vision of the Sidney Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership group and help from many area businesses, organizations and volunteers. Gartside FAS is a very popular destination for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and p...

There will also be restricted access in the WMA, but some hunting opportunity is available for other species. “With lower water levels, there may be more of an opportunity to hunt pheasant and deer on the WMA,” said Ryan Williamson, area biologist. “There has been a good production of cattails, bulrushes and other early succession vegetation on the d...

  • Fall Lawn Care

    Tim Fine|Sep 21, 2016

If you are like me, you are looking forward to putting the mower and the weed-eater in the storage shed about now. While we are rapidly approaching the time to put the mower away, I would not go as far as to say that lawn care is finished for the year. There are still a few things that can be done to make sure that, in the spring of 2017, your lawn will get off to a good start. The first and most important thing to help your lawn along is a good fall fertilization. A good rule of thumb when it...

  • Pruning 101

    Tim Fine|Sep 21, 2016

Now that summer is behind us and the leaves are starting to turn, we are rapidly approaching the optimum time to prune trees and shrubs in our area. While pruning typically conjures up more questions than answers from most people, here are some very basic steps to consider before you start "hacking and whacking". The first question that should be answered in regards to pruning is "when do I prune?". Typically, pruning is always recommended when trees are dormant, the same would apply for shrubs...

  • Home Improvement: What's Old is New Again

    Sep 21, 2016

(BPT) - Fall is a popular time for home improvement as people think about impressing their guests during the holidays. It is also a time for change, which makes the current trends in home décor so unique. Simply put, what's old is new again. Homeowners are gravitating to classic and timeworn elements to give their home a traditional feel. Character is not something with which every home is born. Newer construction often sacrifices some of the charm or detail of older home styles that can be...

  • 5 Ways to Prepare Your Outdoor Living Space for Fall

    Sep 21, 2016

(BPT) - While everyone eagerly waits for spring each year and wishes summer could last a month or two longer, when it comes down to it, fall just might be America's favorite season. It's warm but not hot, the air has that clean crispness that's hard to describe and perhaps the biggest draw, pumpkin-flavored everything. And let's not forget about all those bright, beautiful leaf colors that come with the change in weather. So why start shutting down your outdoor living space with the first sign o...

  • Everything Must Come Together to Make a Clean Shot

    Meagan Dotson|Aug 31, 2016

It was bow hunting season a few years ago when Ryan Dempsey, who's been bow hunting all his life, went out with his friends in hopes of bringing home an elk. The three of them had been watching a 6x6 bull elk come through the same coulee for two or three days, however, they were preoccupied with another, bigger, bull elk, and so Dempsey decided that the smaller of the two would be a good fall back. As the hunt continued over the next few days, the elk they'd been tracking was spooked by another...

  • Sage Grouse Hunting Open Again in Montana for Month of September

    Aug 31, 2016

Expanded opportunities for sage grouse hunting will be offered this year in Montana as bird populations have rebounded well after two years of favorable spring weather conditions. Though the brief decline and subsequent bounce back of sage grouse numbers can likely be attributed to weather and normal cycles in bird populations, the population numbers and quick rebound are encouraging, said Catherine Wightman, wildlife habitat and Farm Bill coordinator for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. "These...
