Sidney Sugars is fortunate to work with a fantastic group of growers, combining everyone's expertise to produce a high quality crop of sugar beets and then turn those beets into America's favorite food – sugar. This year, instead of doing their Top 10 awards as they have for over 30 years, Sidney Sugars chose to "Salute the Growers" and celebrate all instead of just a few. The Top 10 was started in 1985 by then agricultural manager Dave Melin, recognizing growers for producing the highest t...
Planting to stand is the key to producing a sugar beet crop that does not need thinning but allows for a maximum number of beets per acre. "The seed going in the ground is the foundation for the whole growing year," Sidney Sugars agriculturalist Vanessa Pooch said. In cooperation with NDSU, Sidney Sugars hosts two days every spring when growers can bring in their planter units and have them tested to insure that the unit is in good working order. Each unit is a row on a planter. Most planters...
Dave Schlothauer, of German Russian descent, left his home In Colorado at the age of 13 and made his way with a buddy to Fairview, MT, starting the farming operation that continues today. He worked for various farmers and then rented some land after he married his wife Frieda. Eventually, they purchased their own small farm. Two of Dave and Frieda's sons, Ken and Harold, took over the farm and worked together until their sons were older and wanted to join in. Harold and his son Dirk now farm a...

Kathryn Cayko has been spreading the word about genetically modified organisms (GMO) to people around the community. Cayko is the Montana Biotech Spokeswoman for the Montana Dakota Sugar Beet growers. Cayko had worked in plant biotechnology for several years before starting her position as an agriculturalist at Sidney Sugars. She is honored that she was given the opportunity to speak for farmers that are busy growing, planting, and harvesting crops. "Farmers are very unrepresented in Washington...
It takes a special brand of man to start from very little, seek the knowledge he needs to begin a lifelong career, and begin without hesitation. Ethan Chamberlain, 21 years old of Sidney, MT, is a Factory District grower for Sidney Sugars. He farmed 75 acres this past year with a crop that averaged 30 tons per acre. Chamberlain, born and raised in Sidney by Tony Chamberlain and Wendi Chamberlain, began working as a farmhand while attending Sidney High School. While he was in school, he was a...
The Steinbeisser family of Sidney, encompassing three generations, makes their huge farming and ranching operation work using mutual trust and co-operation. Brothers Jim, Don Jr., Craig, and their cousin Russell run VS Inc, with each one contributing their expertise to a given aspect, and helping everywhere when needed. "It works because of the way we grew up," Don Jr. explained. "Dad and Uncle Joe each had areas they took care of with Uncle Joe taking care of the cattle, hay and small grains;...

His responsibilities include helping the growers in his area grow a high quality crop. He will cover Savage, Pleasant View...
On Feb 9th, Sidney Sugars was on Day 129 of a campaign expected to last 173 days, ending about March 25th, depending on the amount of shrinkage in the piles. Dave Garland, Sidney Sugars general manager, is one of the few who would like to see winter stay for a while. Colder temperatures help preserve the beets with the fluctuation in temperatures the biggest issue according to Garland. "The jury is still out on damage from the recent warm spell, but it does affect storage," he said. "We're...
In 2015, a federal court judge in Great Falls issued an injunction against the construction of the fish bypass and concrete weir on the Yellowstone River at Intake. At risk is water for 58,000 acres of irrigated cropland, the economic vitality of several communities, and any project being completed for the recovery of the endangered Pallid Sturgeon. Acting assistant US Attorney General Jeffrey Wood filed a motion Feb 1, 2017 on behalf of federal agencies asking the court to dissolve the construc...

Giving is the reason for the season, so it seems only appropriate that #GivingTuesday would follow shopping days Black Friday, Shop Small Saturday, and Cyber Monday. #GivingTuesday is a social media movement that began about five years ago as a worldwide initiative for philanthropy. At www.givingtuesday.org, people can search for non-profits in their area, or anywhere, should they choose to give on a nation-wide or worldwide level. Currently, Sidney has four non-profit groups that are...
I've decided that Christmas truly belongs to youngsters. The eager eyes, the intense anticipation, and the sheer enchantment of the season spills out of every child's being, and adults cannot help but get drawn into the magical wonderland we call Christmas. Children love the decorating, the school concerts, and the idea of filling their homes from stem to stern with the reminders of the season. They thrive on the overall atmosphere of this special time of year that fills them with great...

Having been born and raised in Richland County, agriculture has had a lasting impression on me, and still does. As a child, my mom and grandma leased their land to wheat farmers, but it was beet farming that I really have memories of. My mom started driving beet truck in 1984 when she was pregnant with me. She worked for Tom, Montie, and Steve Lorenz for six years, and for Simards. I have distant memories of riding in those dusty trucks. Seat belts were always mandatory, but in those old trucks...
The Roundup is proud to sponsor Harvest Days, Oct. 19th – 28th, as a way to celebrate and honor those in the agricultural industry. Richland County Boys & Girls Club members and students in the MonDak Heritage Center’s Wednesday afternoon enrichment classes entered fall and harvest related artwork for a chance to win six weeks of enrichment classes,...
Celebrate 2016 as the International Year of Pulses! Pulse crops, that is, and there are plenty of reasons to celebrate because Montana and North Dakota are the two leading states for pulse crop production, such as dry peas and lentils. Montana and North Dakota are responsible for 80% of all dry pea and lentil production. Pulse crops are good for the farmer because they provide an income opportunity when the prices of grain crops are down, and pulse crops planted in rotation with other crops are...
In 2003 Beau Anderson made a decision that would change the way he farmed. The price of wheat was down; durum was only selling for $3.35 a bushel, but lentils were selling for $.12 per pound. State and federal legislation had recently made it possible for pulse crops to be insured, and so it seemed like the perfect time to try something new. Anderson is now the Vice President of the Dry Pea & Lentil Council, and it's his thirteenth year as a pulse crop producer, and his ninth year on the Board...
