    Katelyn Sponheim|Oct 2, 2024

For generations, hunting season has been an all-hands-on-deck event for the Eskridge family. Donn Eskridge grew up hunting pheasant, duck, fur, and deer in his home state of Iowa. His wife, Vicki (Reimers), grew up hunting elk, deer, rabbits, and upland birds with her family in the mountains of Wyoming. After meeting and marrying in Montana, they packed up our brothers, John Baker, Clayton Eskridge, and on all their adventures. Pheasant hunting in eastern Montana, deer and antelope hunting in th...

  • Montana Big Game Hunting Forecasts

    Oct 2, 2024

Destination: Northeast Montana (Region 6) A couple years of drought and the long winter in 2022-23 have reduced deer and elk populations. FWP adjusted license quotas in many districts as needed. The winter of 2023-24 was fairly mild, however, and habitat conditions in much of northeast Montana have improved considerably. Abundant spring and early summer rainfall earlier this year resulted in good recovery of range plants. Elk Surveys in the Missouri River Breaks showed elk numbers about 56 percent below long-term averages and population at 41...

  • Ask First To Hunt On Private Land

    Montana FWP News|Oct 2, 2024

Don’t wait until it is too late. Hunters who haven’t already asked permission from private landowners to hunt need to do so as soon as possible. Montana law requires hunters to obtain permission for all hunting on private land. Whether pursuing upland game birds, coyotes, gophers or any other wildlife, hunters must have permission from the landowner before hunting on private property. This also includes entering private land to retrieve wildlife or to access public land to hunt. Landowners may grant permission in person, over the phone, in wri...

  • Forage Testing & Hay Prices

    Marley Voll|Sep 18, 2024

A question we commonly get here in the Extension Office is, “What is hay worth?” The answer to this question usually is, it depends. The price of hay depends on multiple factors including cost of production and quality. Hay quality varies based on management, storage, and type of hay. Different forage types will be higher in protein or energy, and this greater quality is worth more than other forage that is low in protein or energy. Hay high in nitrates would be worth less than hay that is not. These quality factors can only be determined by...

Now, thanks in part to a doctoral student in MSU's Gianforte School of Computing, it's in the state's agriculture fields helping farmers take the guesswork out of maximizing crop yields.
