Eight years ago, the Sportsmen Against Hunger program was started in North Dakota by the North Dakota Community Action Partnership (NDCAP) after assessing the state’s needs. What they found was that a number of people, statewide, weren’t getting enough food. After observing this, they started a venison donation program in order to help those low-income participants that didn’t have enough food to feed themselves and their families. North Dakota hunters can choose to donate their deer meat to th...
North Dakota’s deer gun season opens Nov. 9 at noon, and State Game and Fish Department officials are cautioning deer hunters to be wary of where they hunt. Late-season weather conditions can quickly cause North Dakota’s small and mid-sized waters to ice over, giving the appearance of safe ice. Nancy Boldt, department boat and water safety coordinator, said hunters should be cautious of walking on frozen stock ponds, sloughs, creeks and rivers. “Ice can form overnight, causing unstable conditions,” Boldt said. “Even though deer might be able to...
Fire danger is not typically a concern during deer season, but this year could be an exception in the southwestern part of the state. Jeb Williams, North Dakota Game and Fish Department assistant wildlife chief, said even though much of the state has received much-needed moisture the past few weeks, some areas are still dry. “With temperatures forecasted to be in the 40s on the Nov. 9 deer opener, we encourage hunters to use common sense and to exercise caution to prevent fires,” Williams said. Typically fire is not a big concern in Nov...
After a rocky start which included heat, rain and frost delays, the 2012 beet harvest was able to go full speed until rain and wind shut down several stations October 17 and 18. Sidney Sugars agricultural manager Russ Fullmer reported tremendous tonnage averaging 27 to 28 tons per acre, but a disappointing sugar average of approximately 17.9. “The frost the first week of harvest stopped the sugar, “ Fullmer said. “The plant also uses some of the stored sugar to regrow leaves, reducing the content even more. The sugar content would have conti...

With warmer than usual temperatures and drought like conditions, the LaBatte family, like many area farmers, have spent the past few months managing their crops and fields while keeping watchful eyes on what Mother Nature might be planning. With the harvest season well underway for most, the LaBattes are busy moving their crops to the local elevators while waiting to see how their sunflower crops fare once they are harvested this November. “In the end, it all comes down to moisture and market p...
After a year of unprecedented warmth this summer, coupled by last winter’s milder temperatures, the debate over whether Old Man Winter will make an appearance this year is the topic of discussion for many. “It is difficult to predict exactly what will happen this winter in our area. I do not think it will be a particularly bad winter and may be milder than normal, but again, at this point it is really all speculative. The Climate Prediction Center in Washington, DC is predicting warmer, and mil...

Between the dry weather this summer and the oil impact, times aren’t exactly easy for the cattle ranchers in our area. A couple of our local producers provided some insight on how the season is going for them. “The oil impact for us is huge,” stated Howard Rambur of Rambur Charolais when asked if the weather and the oil has impacted him. Just like most businesses in the area, he is having trouble finding hired hands. As far as the weather goes, they have been able to do everything as sched...

This time of year, it's often hard to tell who's more "birdy"-hunters or their dogs. And now, with the advent of Open Fields for Game Bird Hunters opening gates for up to 17,000 acres of walk-in game bird hunting, it's clearly a tossup.
