Holidays are usually a time to share peace, love and unity with loved ones. Sadly, for families living in a home filled with domestic violence this is not the case. Domestic violence can affect a family at any time, but added stressors can contribute to increasing violent incidents during holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. For some, holidays prove to be a stressful period due to added financial burdens, the high costs of presents, social drinking, spending extra time with family and friends, child custody disputes and...
As the holidays draw near, most people are making plans to enjoy the season with their loved ones. But for many, the holiday season will be a very difficult time, especially in the Midwest where thousands are without homes following the tornado outbreak there. Montana Red Cross is asking people to remember those in need this year by giving something meaningful – giving help and hope to those in need. “Make the holiday season truly meaningful by lending a hand to people who need your help,” said Rod Kopp, CEO of Montana Red Cross. “Your support...
In 2011 What To Do With The Kids® polled our followers and we asked them to give us their list of the top Christmas or Holiday Movies or Television Shows that the whole family can watch. The list was well received and judging by the feedback was very popular. Two years later however we decided to ask our followers again and there has been quite a shift in popularity of some of those classic movies. It seems that black and white movies are now out. Many parents suggested that once the movie started, the kids would complain about the color, or...
For a Montana farmer, a lot depends on the weather. That’s perhaps because their livelihood depends on it. For one area farmer, Mother Nature was very accommodating this farming season. Anton Borg of Sidney can’t recall any year since he started dry land farming back in 2009, when crops looked this good. With high yields and strong test weights, the season promises to go down in his farm’s history as one for the books. “The last few years have been good. But this year we had really adequate mois...
Sugarbeet harvest 2013 should be completed by the end of this week according to Sidney Sugars agriculturalist Russ Fullmer. Before the heavy rains caused some delays, the crop was 80% harvested. “We broke records for weekly and daily tons with 1 day coming in at over 70,000 tons. The digging was good, the trucks were going, everything was clean and there were no breakdowns,” Fullmer said. “We’re really lucky compared to Western Sugar (in Billings). Some of those growers haven’t been able to d...

They say that farming is not just a job, but a way of life. This has certainly been true for 3rd generation Fairview sugar beet farmer Robbie Stepan. As Stepan reflects on his last 41 years of farming, and experiences his final beet harvest, his feelings expressed of retirement are bittersweet. Stepan has always enjoyed beet harvest and says that he couldn’t ask for a better one than this year’s. However, Stepan has not been able to say that about every harvest and remembers some very wet years,...

Cover crops have been around for a long time. Until recent years, no one gave them much thought. That is changing. According to Ann Ronning, Roosevelt County Extension Agent, the concept of cover crops dates back hundreds of years. “It really went by the wayside after WWII with the development of synthetic fertilizers and chemicals. Prior to the War, cover crops were used to help prevent soil erosion and to add fertility to the soil,” she said. Today, researchers are looking at the pot...

Hill started pheasant hunting at a young age where he grew up in Nashua, Montana and has been doing it ever since. Doug has a pointing dog named S...
Anyone purchasing a Montana hunting license will now have an opportunity to also make an on-the-spot donation to Hunters Against Hunger. “A new Montana law allows individuals to make a contribution that will help nonprofit groups process donated wild game for free distribution by Montana food banks to help feed people in need,” said Ron Aasheim, spokesman for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks in Helena. When one purchases or applies for a deer, elk, antelope, or bison license or permit the license provider will ask if he or she wishes to don...
As a result of the Federal government shutdown, essentially all services provided by the Bureau of Land Management will be suspended, with the exception of law enforcement and emergency response functions. Approximately 4,000 recreation facilities, including visitor centers, facilities, campgrounds, boat ramps and other recreation sites will be closed. With an estimated $4.8 billion in revenues in 2012, the BLM nationally returns more than four dollars for every budget dollar it receives. The BLM manages 245 million acres – more than any of t...

This season deer hunters in Montana will find another mix of hunting opportunities across the state when the general season opens Oct. 26. On the upside, FWP wildlife biologists are reporting better fawn production and survival in many areas. Like other big game hunting, a nice cold front with plenty of snow should lead to some good hunting this season. On the downside, reports of another spotty outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease, a fatal virus in deer that’s caused by biting insects, are coming in from across Montana...
Even as populations begin a slow rebound, hunters in Montana will have to work hard to bag an antelope again this season in many areas. Montana’s antelope archery season will close Oct. 11 and the general rifle season for antelope will run Oct. 12-Nov. 10....
Motorists are reminded to watch for deer along roadways, especially this time of year, because juvenile animals are dispersing from their home ranges. October through early December is the peak period for deer-vehicle accidents. Motorists are advised to slow down and exercise caution after dark to reduce the likelihood of encounters with deer along roadways. Most deer-vehicle accidents occur primarily at dawn and dusk when deer are most often moving around. Motorists should be aware of warning signs signaling deer are in the area. When you see...
Montana’s Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) provide for the protection of wildlife habitat and great opportunities for hunting this time of year. In order to manage for these goals, the Fish and Wildlife Commission has implemented important rules for public use on WMAs ranging from seasonal closures, to food storage orders, camping stay limits and more. While hunters and other recreationists are required to abide by all the rules for public use, here are some of the key rules to remember (starting with the newest): 1. (*NEW) Food Storage – Bea...
Montana’s annual youth-only deer hunt—set for Oct 17-18—will come a week earlier this year. The two-day special season is open to youngsters ages 12 to 15 who’ve passed a hunter safety course. Additionally, 11-year-olds who passed hunter safety may hunt if they’ll be 12 by Jan. 16, 2014. “There’s been some confusion this year due to the scheduling of the statewide teachers’ convention,” said Ron Aasheim, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks spokesman in Helena. The youth hunt is always scheduled during the public schools’ two-day vacation in October...
