Leadership Williston was developed and implemented by the Chamber of Commerce's Partners in Education and Leadership Committee "To Train and Empower Williston's Future Leaders." As a Leadership Williston participant, I have found myself in a few places I would consider to be outside my area of expertise. My most recent, "Leadership Adventure" (This is what I have dubbed my Leadership Williston meeting days.) was to the Sidney Sugar plant in Sidney, MT. At first glance the large, ominous building...
Sidney Sugars honored the Top 10 Beet Growers at the annual Top 10 luncheon held January 15 at St. Matthews multi purpose center. Before announcing this year’s winners, agricultural manager Russ Fullmer gave an overview of the 2013 growing season. Mother Nature presented Sidney Sugars and beet growers with challenges at planting, harvesting and in between. The traditional planting date saw snow still on the ground, causing delays of a week or two. Within 2 weeks of emergence, pivots were up and farmers were looking at having to start i...
For the Lapp brothers, it was a good season to be a beet farmer. This year, they were selected by Sidney Sugars Incorporated as the top producing sugar beet farmers in the small farm, “0-247 acres” category. Winners are judged based on a formula that factors in qualities such as tonnage and sugar content levels. “This harvest was the best one ever. The soil conditions were perfect. We had little rain and no equipment breakdowns. In a normal year, those can happen often,” said Gary Lapp. For 28...

Farmers are invited to attend informational meetings on industrial beet production and processing at five locations across central North Dakota the week of Jan. 27. Industrial beets, also called energy beets, are sugar beets bred for the biofuels market and industrial purposes. The beets are used to create ethanol and high-value chemicals. The meetings will update farmers on industrial beet processing development efforts in the state and answer grower questions about industrial beet production and the economics of industrial beets. “Farmer invo...

Sugarbeet harvest 2013 should be completed by the end of this week according to Sidney Sugars agriculturalist Russ Fullmer. Before the heavy rains caused some delays, the crop was 80% harvested. “We broke records for weekly and daily tons with 1 day coming in at over 70,000 tons. The digging was good, the trucks were going, everything was clean and there were no breakdowns,” Fullmer said. “We’re really lucky compared to Western Sugar (in Billings). Some of those growers haven’t been able to d...
They say that farming is not just a job, but a way of life. This has certainly been true for 3rd generation Fairview sugar beet farmer Robbie Stepan. As Stepan reflects on his last 41 years of farming, and experiences his final beet harvest, his feelings expressed of retirement are bittersweet. Stepan has always enjoyed beet harvest and says that he couldn’t ask for a better one than this year’s. However, Stepan has not been able to say that about every harvest and remembers some very wet years,...
A record number of creatively decorated sugar beets made judging this year’s contest a huge challenge. Thank you to everyone who entered! Special thanks go to Fairview Super Valu for hosting the event and providing great prizes, and to the Powder Keg for always being so generous. Sidney Sugars will have daily harvest reports on 660 KEYZ beginning September 30. The...

All signs still point to an above average sugarbeet crop. Soil samples taken last week were the second best in the past five years according to Sidney Sugars agriculturalist Russ Fullmer. The next root samples will be taken the second week in August. Farmers are irrigating regularly and Fullmer says they will need to keep the crop wet until harvest. Although the crop looks good overall, there has been some hail damage including 88 acres north of Glendive that were severely damaged, 740 acres by...

Sidney Sugars Agricultural Manager Russ Fullmer was much more optimistic about this year’s sugarbeet crop last week than he had been. Sunshine and warmer temperatures have the beet fields looking much healthier. “Even the little ones are growing now,” Fullmer said. Even though the rains have been wonderful, the crop needs heat. The best fields should have leaves touching in the row by July 4th. That’s a normal indication of the health of the crop but Fullmer said that some of the new Roundup...

Sugar beet farmers and Sidney Sugars personnel are smiling right now with multi-million dollar rains producing good stands of beets. Sidney Sugars agricultural manager Russ Fullmer says the season got off to a rocky start. Planting was late and then the crop was really in trouble with moisture leaving the seedbed. Stands were spotty and some areas were in tough shape. On the positive side, less than 100 acres had to be replanted due to wind damage. Then the rains came. With the plentiful moisture all over Sidney Sugars growing area, the...
